Check ICE Detainee Status

To find someone released or transferred from Talbot County custody to immigration authorities, first separate local jail status from ICE custody. The ICE Online Detainee Locator System is designed for adults currently held by ICE or people held by Customs and Border Protection beyond the stated qualifying period. It is not an archive of Talbot County jail releases. A local record may show release to ICE even though detention continues. The locator, immigration court information, and the sheriff's transfer record must be read as distinct parts of the same custody path.

ICE Detainee Release Meaning

The ICE Online Detainee Locator System, commonly called ODLS, serves a narrow federal immigration purpose. ICE describes it as a locator for adults in ICE custody and for people who have been in CBP custody for more than 48 hours. It does not cover an ordinary Talbot County Jail detainee merely because that person was arrested locally.

If the Talbot County Sheriff's record says “released to ICE” or notes an ICE hold, the word released refers to local custody ending. The person may have moved directly into federal immigration detention. Community release, transfer, removal, and continued detention are different outcomes. Use the receiving agency's official source before deciding which one occurred.

Transfer warning: Release from Talbot County custody to ICE is not proof of release into the community or the end of federal detention.

Search ICE Custody Records

The official USA.gov detained-by-ICE instructions describe two main search methods. One uses the person's A-number and country of birth. The other uses name, country of birth, and date of birth. Exact matching matters, and the portal's current prompts control.

  1. Open the official ICE ODLS portal.
  2. Choose the A-number route when that identifier and country of birth are known.
  3. Otherwise use the name route with country of birth and birth date.
  4. Review the returned identity and custody details with care.
  5. If no record appears, confirm spelling, identifiers, age, and whether the person meets ODLS coverage.
  6. Contact the appropriate ICE office or legal representative when the online result does not resolve current custody.

ODLS is for adults. The absence of a record can have several causes, including a mismatch, a recent transfer, a status outside the public locator's scope, or the fact that the person is not in ICE custody. It does not by itself show release. Record the date and exact wording of a result before seeking confirmation.

Note: A-number searches still require country of birth, while name searches use additional birth and nationality details to narrow the match.

Talbot ICE Custody Chain

No Talbot County ICE detention contract or dedicated federal immigration facility was found in the research. ICE appears in the Facility Map as an external system that may apply in an individual case, not as a detention center located in Talbot County. The local sheriff record is therefore essential when the search begins with a Talbot County arrest.

Start with the Talbot County Sheriff's Office to determine whether the person left the county jail and whether a receiving agency was noted. If ICE received the person, continue with ODLS. If the record instead shows a state transfer, use GDC. If it shows a federal criminal hold, use federal court and USMS sources. The label on the sending record directs the next search.

ICE Records and Court Status

ODLS provides custody-location help, not the full immigration case. USA.gov points to the Executive Office for Immigration Review automated line at 1-800-898-7180 for immigration court information. Court status and detention status answer different questions. A hearing or case entry does not prove physical release, while an ODLS result does not explain every court ruling.

Ask for the exact record that fits the question. For local transfer, request the Talbot County booking and release or transfer record. For current ICE location, use ODLS and ICE contact channels. For immigration proceedings, use EOIR information and legal counsel where appropriate. Avoid asking the county clerk to interpret a federal immigration case.

A-number
An immigration identification number used in the ODLS search when paired with country of birth.
Detainer
A request or hold that can affect where a person goes when another agency's custody ends.
Transfer
Movement from one agency's custody to another, not necessarily entry into the community.
Removal
An immigration outcome distinct from release from a county jail or release within the United States.

Confirm an ICE Release

A disappearance from ODLS should not be treated as a complete release record. Online data can change, and the locator is aimed at current covered custody. Confirm the last known location with ICE. Check the immigration court source for case information. When the person came from Talbot County Jail, retain the local transfer record because it documents when the sheriff's custody ended.

If the question is whether a person ever left Talbot County Jail, the sheriff is the direct local custodian. If the question is whether ICE detention ended, ICE must confirm it. If the question is why a legal status changed, the immigration court record may provide context. One agency's result cannot establish all three.

Note: The date a county transfer occurred may differ from the date ICE custody changed or an immigration court acted.

ICE Versus Criminal Custody

ICE detention is civil immigration custody, while BOP custody follows a federal prison commitment and USMS custody covers federal criminal detainees. GDC handles Georgia prison custody. The Talbot County Sheriff's Office handles the local jail. A person can move among systems, but each maintains its own record.

Georgia VINELink is not ICE ODLS and should not be used as a substitute. The BOP inmate locator also does not report ICE status. Search the system that actually received the person, then use court records for the legal order behind that custody.

Talbot ICE Record Requests

For a written local record, give the sheriff a full name, approximate booking period, and a clear request for the release or transfer entry. Ask whether the record identifies the receiving agency. Do not assume that the local file contains a later ICE outcome. It generally documents the county's own action.

Federal records follow federal access rules, not Georgia county open-records terms. Direct an ICE record request to the relevant federal custodian and state the exact document or date range. The Talbot County release search provides the broader named-person path when the custody system is still unclear.

ICE Locator Contact Route

The locator and immigration court system serve different tasks, so a failed online search should be routed by question. Use ICE for current qualifying detention and location questions. Use EOIR for immigration court case information. Use the Talbot County Sheriff's Office for the local release or transfer entry. None of these sources can correct a record created by one of the others.

Official Immigration Custody Sources

Before calling, write down the full name, birth details, country of birth, A-number if known, and the last confirmed agency and date. Give only the details the official source requests. If ICE confirms a current detention location, note the time of confirmation because transfers can occur. If EOIR returns a case event, do not turn that court event into a claim about the person's physical location.

The same rule applies after an apparent release. Ask ICE to clarify whether the person left ICE custody, transferred, or moved into another process. Preserve the exact wording instead of shortening it to “released.” When Talbot County is the starting point, retain the sheriff's entry alongside the federal result. Together they show when local custody ended and what the later federal source reported.

An attorney or authorized representative may be needed for case-specific advice or nonpublic details. Public locator information can confirm a limited status, but it is not a substitute for legal advice and does not disclose every operational or case fact. Keep the records task factual: identify the source, the date, the custody system, and the event that source can verify.
