Trace a USMS Federal Hold

To find someone released or transferred from Talbot County custody under a federal hold, trace the sending and receiving agencies in order. The U.S. Marshals Service manages federal detainees from federal arrest or court-ordered custody through acquittal or commitment to the Bureau of Prisons. It does not operate a public county-style release list for Talbot County. A sheriff record may show release to USMS while detention continues. Federal court records, USMS custody information, and the BOP locator each cover a different stage.

USMS Federal Hold Meaning

The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner information says USMS assumes custody of people arrested by federal agencies and handles their detention and transportation. That work continues until acquittal or until the person is committed to BOP after conviction. A federal court order can also place a person in USMS custody.

USMS may house detainees in local jails under detention arrangements. The legal custodian can therefore be federal even when the physical bed is in a local or regional facility. If Talbot County records a “federal hold,” “USMS hold,” or release to the Marshals, the entry may document a transfer out of county custody rather than a final release.

Custody distinction: A person released to USMS has left the sending jail but remains a federal detainee unless another official record shows otherwise.

Confirm a USMS Transfer

Start with the last agency known to have physical custody. If that was Talbot County Jail, ask the sheriff for the booking, hold, release, or transfer notation. The exact wording can identify USMS as the receiving agency. Then use the federal criminal case to trace detention orders, hearings, acquittal, sentencing, and commitment.

  1. Confirm the person and booking period with the Talbot County Sheriff's Office.
  2. Ask whether the local release entry identifies USMS or another federal agency.
  3. Locate the federal court case tied to the federal arrest or hold.
  4. Review custody, detention, and later judgment entries from the court.
  5. If conviction led to BOP commitment, search the official BOP Inmate Locator.
  6. If the person was acquitted or ordered released, seek the court order and confirm the custody event.

There is no single public USMS search that functions like a county inmate roster in the research. The federal court record is thus central. BOP is useful only after commitment to BOP, and a county roster is useful only for the period of local physical custody.

Note: A federal case number, arresting agency, or register number can separate the right record from a similar name.

Talbot Federal Custody Path

The research found no dedicated federal detention facility in Talbot County. USMS is listed as an external custody system because an individual Talbot County arrest or hold can enter the federal process. The Facility Map does not mean that the Marshals operate a local jail at a Talbot County address.

A person may move from local arrest to a federal hold, from USMS detention to acquittal, or from USMS detention to BOP after conviction. Some people may be housed outside the county while their federal court case proceeds. Physical location, legal custody, and case jurisdiction are related but not identical facts.

USMS Versus BOP Records

USMS and BOP are not interchangeable names for federal custody. The Marshals handle detainees during the federal court process and transport them as required. BOP operates federal prison custody after commitment. Someone held pretrial by USMS may not appear in the BOP inmate locator at all.

After BOP commitment, use the BOP Inmate Locator. BOP's record guidance says a past release date with no facility indicates release from BOP custody on that date. That later event should not be substituted for the earlier date Talbot County transferred the person to the Marshals.

Federal hold
A federal basis for keeping or transferring a person rather than completing an ordinary local release.
Pretrial detainee
A person held while the federal case is pending and before a final conviction sentence.
Commitment
The legal transfer into BOP responsibility after a qualifying federal judgment.
Acquittal
A not-guilty outcome that differs from dismissal, sentence completion, or transfer.

USMS Records and Contacts

The national USMS prisoner page explains the agency's role but does not provide a Talbot County public release feed. A status inquiry should include the person's full name, the federal case or agency if known, and the last confirmed place and date of custody. Public disclosure may be limited, so the federal court docket is often the best public record of custody orders.

For the local portion, contact the Talbot County Sheriff's Office at 188 Jackson Avenue, Talbotton, GA 31827, phone 706-665-3111. Ask for the county record only: admission, hold, release, or transfer. For the federal legal basis, use the federal court. For a post-conviction prison status, use BOP. Each request should go to the office that created it.

Do not apply the Georgia Open Records Act response terms to USMS or BOP requests. Federal access procedures govern federal agency records. The county's own record remains subject to the rules applicable to its custodian.

Federal Hold Release Proof

Written proof depends on the event being proved. The sheriff's transfer entry proves that Talbot County custody ended and may identify USMS as the recipient. A federal release order proves what the court directed. A USMS record may address federal custody or transport. A BOP result addresses the prison stage. No one document necessarily provides the entire sequence.

If a court ordered release but another detainer existed, custody might continue under a different case or agency. Conversely, release from USMS after acquittal does not create a BOP record because there was no commitment. Read each event by agency, date, and legal authority.

Note: “Released” in a sending agency's file can mean “released to another agency,” so always read the destination field.

USMS, ICE, and GDC

A USMS federal criminal hold is different from ICE immigration detention and from GDC state prison custody. Use ICE ODLS only for qualifying immigration custody. Use GDC for a Georgia prison sentence. Use USMS and the federal court for federal detention, then BOP after commitment.

Georgia VINELink may help with a participating local or state agency, but it does not replace federal court, USMS, BOP, or ICE records. A missing VINELink result does not settle a federal hold question.

Trace Talbot Release Records

Build a simple chronology: local arrest, county booking, hold entry, local transfer, federal detention, court outcome, and any BOP commitment or release. Record the source for every step. This makes gaps visible and prevents one agency's release label from being stretched beyond its scope.

The Talbot County released inmate search covers the wider named-person process when it is not yet clear whether the next agency was county, state, federal, or immigration. Begin with the last confirmed custodian and follow the transfer rather than searching every system without a record link.

USMS Federal Custody Contact

There is no researched Talbot County USMS public release desk or county-style Marshals roster. The official USMS prisoner source is the starting point for the agency's role, while the federal court docket supplies public case events. The Talbot County Sheriff's Office remains the contact for its own booking, hold, release, and transfer entries.

Prepare the full name, approximate detention period, federal case number if known, and last confirmed agency before making an inquiry. Ask for the precise event. A request for the county transfer entry belongs with the sheriff. A request for a detention or release order belongs with the federal court. A post-commitment federal prison lookup belongs with BOP.

Preserve the date and source of each answer. If USMS information and a local record seem to conflict, compare the event described. The sheriff may be reporting when county custody ended, while the federal source is reporting continued detention. Both can be accurate because they refer to different custodians and stages.
